ABOUT US: The Barrington Area Library is a busy, friendly place that supports lifelong, active learning, and an appreciation for creativity and innovation. Customers of all ages and interests visit our Library, expecting to find excellent and informed service, and spaces designed for private work and group collaboration. Pages play an essential behind-the-scenes role in supporting this experience by maintaining the organization and accessibility of the Library’s collections, keeping public areas orderly, and assisting customers with basic directional questions.

JOB SUMMARY:

  • Perform tasks such as checking in, inspecting, alphabetizing, shelving, and straightening materials to ensure ready access of the collection on Library shelves.
  • Maintain the appearance of public areas of Library by collecting and re-shelving materials (at various heights) while using a push cart.
  • Inspect labels to ensure that the collections are correctly shelved by the Dewey Decimal System.
  • Provide directional assistance to customers as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be at least 16 years of age and able to pass shelving test.
  • Must be able to work independently and complete tasks on time.
  • Must have strong collaboration and problem-solving skills.
  • Must be familiar with MS Office and basic data entry skills on electronic device.
  • Must be dependable, detail-oriented, and reliable.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Standard office environment
  • Push heavy carts daily

LOCATION: 505 N. Northwest Highway, Barrington, IL

SCHEDULING: This is a part-time, hourly position averaging 16 hours per week. Shifts are four hours each and include Wednesdays and Thursdays (5 PM – 9 PM) plus Saturdays and Sundays (1 PM – 5 PM).

PAY & BENEFITS: The starting pay range is $15.75 - $16.20 per hour. This position is eligible for paid vacation, paid sick time, and bereavement pay.

Full-Time Adult Services Librarian

ABOUT US: The Barrington Area Library is a busy, friendly place that supports lifelong learning and values creativity and innovation. Customers of all ages expect excellent service and welcoming spaces for both individual work and collaboration. The Adult Services Librarian plays a key role in connecting the community with information and local resources through stewardship of local history, support for genealogy research, and partnerships with local businesses, fostering curiosity, civic engagement, and meaningful connections.

JOB SUMMARY:

  • Serve adult and young adult customers at in-person and virtual service points through expert-level reference, reader’s advisory, and basic technology assistance.
  • Oversee the Library’s Local History collection and lead the development, maintenance, and promotion of genealogy resources, services, and programming for customers.
  • Serve as the Library’s Business Liaison by building relationships with local businesses and entrepreneurs, and developing on-site partnerships, programs, and resources that support the local business community.
  • Plan, coordinate, and facilitate assigned services, projects, and programs, including preparing and training other staff to assist.
  • Select and maintain circulating adult collections as assigned and in accordance with the resource selection policy.
  • Initiate, plan, and present diverse and creative programs in support of department goals and community needs, including researching and arranging for vendors to present programs.
  • Plan, promote, and provide outreach services for community members, organizations, and businesses.
  • Ensure good stewardship of physical and virtual spaces by preparing and merchandising displays, and by producing and updating content for the Library’s website.
  • Actively promote library services, materials, and programs to customers.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master of Library/Information Science from an ALA-accredited program.
  • At least 1 year of relevant work experience, including delivery of library programs to adults and young adults.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including public speaking.
  • Knowledge of adult and young adult collections.
  • Able to use computers, software and other technologies used at a public library.
  • Flexibility to work rotating hours and various work shifts including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: On site and occasional travel within the local community.

LOCATION: 505 N. Northwest Highway, Barrington, IL

SCHEDULING: General scheduling is Monday-Friday, with one evening shift per week and one weekend per month when the schedule allows. Flexibility to work rotating hours and various work shifts including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

PAY & BENEFITS: This is a full-time (37.5 hours per week), exempt (salaried) position. Starting pay range is $60,000 - $63,000 per year.
