Job Title: Head of Adult Services
Department: Adult Services
Reports To: Executive Director

JOB PURPOSE:
Under the direction of the Executive Director, this position is responsible for managing all aspects of the Adult Services Department, including operations, personnel, collection development, adult programming, reference, reader’s advisory, and outreach.

Essential Job Duties:
1. Identifies, develops and implements overall strategy for the department, including goals and objectives.
2. Contributes to the administration of the Library by working collaboratively with the Leadership Team to ensure successful library operations; participates in management meetings and involvement in library-wide initiatives.
3. Plans, coordinates and evaluates service model for proactively providing high quality services that address the needs of the customers and community.
4. Participates in the development and promotion of the Adult Services collection.
5. Participates in the development, coordination and implementation of departmental programs and services including making recommendations for future services.
6. Manages and makes recommendations for the departmental operating budget including the monitoring and approving of departmental expenditures.
7. Participates in the development and implementation of Library policies and procedures and monitors compliance and concerns.
8. Interprets library policies and operations for the public; responds to customer questions, concerns, and complaints.
9. Provides complex reference and readers advisory service to customers; uses and instructs customers on computers, emerging technologies, print and electronic resources, and social media platforms.
10. Gathers, analyzes and interprets library metrics related to services and programs for adults to gauge efficiency and effectiveness of resources and service provisions; prepares reports and statistics as needed.
11. Selects and maintains research databases provided by the department.
12. Serves as person-in-charge (PIC) when necessary.
13. Interviews, hires, manages, trains, schedules and evaluates department staff; responsible for ensuring appropriate staffing and customer satisfaction levels at departmental services points and through online interactions.
14. Oversees use of volunteers in the department.
15. Engages with the community through special projects and meeting attendance involving library promotion and outreach activities related to serving and informing community members.
16. Serves on committees and attend outreach and meetings activities as requested.
17. Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Other Requirements:
• Completion of an ALA-accredited Master’s in Library or Information Science degree.
• Experience in Adult reference, Adult programming, personnel management, and strategic policy making is preferred.
• Experience in current public library initiatives and electronic resources utilized within a library setting is preferred.

Physical Requirements:
• Ability to see, walk, sit, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, stand, talk and hear - these actions are frequently required.
• Physical dexterity to reach shelves of various heights, push full carts and lift heavy containers occasionally (up to 40 pounds) during a work shift.
• Ability to read, write and communicate fluently in English.
• Dexterity to perform data entry on a computer, laptop, iPad, or other electronic device.
• Visual acuity sufficient to read print in 8 point font.
