Orville John Wente was born in Palatine on December 28, 1912, to Herman and Alta Witt Wente.

The Wente family moved to Barrington in 1921, and opened a market, where young Wente worked until he entered the U.S. Army for service in World War II on March 24, 1943. He was assigned to the 87th Quartermaster Corps, where he spent most of his time as a cook, attaining the rank of Sergeant. He was honorably discharged March 10, 1946.

Wente married Ardis E. Calkins, a former Barrington schoolteacher, on November 1 1954, at Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

Experience in his father’s food business and as an Army cook led him to open a successful delicatessen and catering business in 1951.

Wente was active in the Barrington community as a member of the American Legion Post, the Masonic Lodge, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Barrington Fire Department. He also served as a District Scouting official.

Sergeant Orville Wente died June 14, 1956, and is buried with his wife and family in Evergreen Cemetery.
