PVT Lawrence S. Whitcomb

Lawrence Sidney Whitcomb was born in Barrington on July 2, 1888, to Herbert and Julia O’Brien Whitcomb.

Whitcomb served in World War I as a Private in Company H, 330th Infantry, from August I, 1918 to February 13, 1919, when he was honorably discharged.

He married Ida Jacobs on 18 Jul 1908 in Chicago; they raised two daughters before her death in 1932. After 1940, he married Margaret Carrick in Chicago.

Whitcomb held a variety of jobs through his years of residence in Chicago – a bookkeeper, teamster, laborer, inspector at the Schwinn bicycle company. He and his wife lived in Island Lake for the last five years of his life.

Private Lawrence Whitcomb died at Downey Veterans Hospital on September 7, 1955; he is buried with his wife in Barrington’s Evergreen Cemetery.
