Heading into a new millennium, the Library began to investigate innovative ways to reach every part of its 72 square mile district. In late 2003, early 2004, automated pick-up lockers were installed at the Barrington Metra Station and inside the facility of the Village of Barrington Hills. Library customers could search the online catalog, place a hold on a desired item, and ask that the item be delivered to the lockers, rather than held at the Main Library. Now fairly commonplace, this service was newsworthy at the time: "How to use the Barrington library without actually going there," Daily Herald, March 11, 2004.
In 2009, additional lockers were installed at Willow Recreation Center in Palatine, and finally, in 2010, the fourth set of lockers opened for business at South Barrington Club. Our delivery van drops off and picks up materials from these locker locations, and many other book return locations, seven days a week.
In 2024, the Library added a fifth set lockers, outdoors at the Main Library.
