Gustav Meyer was born in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany in 1826. He emigrated to Toronto, Canada at the age of 26.

In November 1855, he was married to Caroline M. Widmeyer, with whom he raised five daughters and two sons.

Mr. Meyer left Canada and came to Illinois in 1857, settling in Barrington, where he followed the trade of cabinet maker. When the Civil War broke out, he enlisted, joining the Seventy-second Regiment, Illinois Volunteers.

In 1880, he established a cheese box factory, supplying boxes and butter tubs for many area cheese producers.

Pvt. Meyer passed away on Jun 27, 1895 in Barrington, and rests at Evergreen Cemetery
