Edward John Schueler, was born Oct. 27, 1919, in Melrose Park to Carl and Marie Schueler.

Schueler married Mary Jane Sedgwick on October 14, 1940, in Chicago; they raised 5 children in Maywood.

He served in the U.S. Navy with distinction in World War II earning nine Bronze Battle Stars, one Purple Heart, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation, the American Defense Service Medal with bronze clasp and numerous other military recognitions. He participated in the Battle of Guadalcanal, during which he was badly injured.

Schueler worked at Hines Veterans Hospital for 21 years, retiring as fire chief. He was most proud of working at Hines as a volunteer, donating 17,907 hours during 33 years of service to the Department of Veteran Affairs. He was past commander of Maywood American Legion Post 133 and Melrose Park VFW Winfield Scott Post 2193.

Petty Officer Edward J. Schueler passed away Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2006, in Barrington, and rests with his wife at Evergreen Cemetery.
