John Michael Welch was born June 25, 1895 in Cary Station, to John P. and Elizabeth Donlea Welch.

Welch served in France during World War I in the U.S. Army‘s HQ Company 330th Field Artillery Regiment from April 29, 1918 to April 25, 1919, when he was honorably discharged as a Private. The regiment participated in major offensives on the Western Front, including the Third Battle of the Aisne, the Aisne-Oise Offensive, the Aisne-Marne Offensive, and the Meuse-Argonne Offensive.

Welch married his wife Gladys Mary Coughlin before 1942; they had no children.

Welch was in the real estate and hospitality business until 1954. He retired in 1969, after 15 years, as building inspector for Lake County Building & Zoning Department.

He was a member and Past Commander of American Legion Post #158, and a member of the Knights of Columbus.

PVT John M. Welch died March 5, 1970 in Elgin, and is buried in Barrington’s Evergreen Cemetery.
