Olive Elfreda Saethre was born in Mille Lacs County, Minnesota on October 5, 1922, to Alfred and Mabel Berglund Saethre.
Saethre attended Duluth State Teachers College in 1942 -1944, before she entered quasi-military service in the Women’s Army Corps. Although her service specifics are undocumented in public sources, her family clearly retained them, as she has a Veterans bronze marker, shown above.
After the war, she completed her degree, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from the University of Minnesota-Duluth in 1948.
On June 14, 1949, she married Philip B. Brugge in Cook County, Minnesota; they raised 5 children.
She worked many years as a substitute teacher in the northwest suburbs while raising her family.
2LT Olive Saethre Brugge died June 12, 2014 in Barrington, and is buried with her husband in Evergreen Cemetery.
