Arthur Freier was born November 18, 1922 in Coloma, Michigan, to Frederick and Emilie Friesen Freier.

 

Freier reported for World War II duty in the U.S. Navy on January 5, 1943, and served as a Signalman on the USS Tuscaloosa, USS Biloxi, and USS Reform. He was honorably discharged as a Signalman First Class on December 4, 1945.

 

Freier returned to Michigan after the war, where he completed flight training, and became an instructor at a government-sponsored flight school for ex-GIs in Benton Harbor. He was also employed as a corporate pilot for several years before joining American Airlines in the summer of 1953.  Freier was promoted to Captain in April, 1966 and flew routes for American more than 30 years.

 

On August 14, 1950, he married Norma Jean Teft in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan; she shared his passion for flying, and competed in flying competitions.  They raised three children in Barrington.

 

SM1C Arthur Freier died December 30, 2014 in Barrington; he is buried with his wife in Evergreen Cemetery.
