Clyde Wesley Slocum was born January 20, 1930 in Echo, Minnesota to Charles P. and Elsie Johannsen Slocum.

Slocum was a graduate of Carleton College, where he was an outstanding athlete and received a B.A. in History. He went on to earn a Masters’ Degree and Doctor of Education at the University of Illinois.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict, and was commissioned in 1952 as a First Lieutenant at Quantico, Virginia.

On December 21, 1952, Slocum married Marjorie McCandless in Oak Park; the couple had three children.

He served as Principal of U.S. Defense Department schools in England and Turkey, then in Illinois public schools in Urbana and Evanston. He was Deputy Superintendent at New Trier Township HS and in Tenafly, New Jersey. He was District 220 Superintendent in Barrington from 1979-1991.

Time in the military helped to inspire Slocum’s support of racial equality and civil rights, and his experiences in Europe and abroad inspired a lasting curiosity of other cultures and adjacent political issues. In retirement, he merged a love of travel with education by working for international and Department of Defense school accrediting agencies. When at home, he enjoyed golf and fishing, and sharing his love of life.

1LT Clyde Slocum died on July 3, 2022 in Downers Grove, and is buried at Barrington’s Evergreen Cemetery.
