Ernest Edwin Bills was born November 9, 1923 in Whitley County, Indiana, to Ernest G. and Mary Estlick Bills.

Bills was living in Barrington, working for the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad when he entered service for World War II in the U.S. Navy on July 8, 1942. He served on the North Atlantic convoy cruiser, USS Arkansas, and in the South Pacific on the USS Miami, a light cruiser. He was honorably discharged on December 17, 1945 as a Gunner’s Mate Second Class.

On June 11, 1947, he married Verdell Wollar in Barrington. They raised six children in Waterford, Wisconsin, where they lived for 23 years before returning to Barrington in 1978.

Bills was a mechanic for Hunter Automatic Machinery Company. He was a member of VFW Post 7706 and Barrington United Methodist Church.

GM2C Ernest Bills died May 23, 1981 in St. Louis, Missouri, and is buried with his wife in Barrington’s Evergreen Cemetery.
