Joseph Grant Holwerda was born in Hartford City, Indiana, on June 15, 1929, to Donald and Martha F. Bugh Holwerda.
Holwerda joined the U.S. Navy in June 30, 1948, and served four years as an Electronics Technician on the USS Vogelsang during the Korean Conflict.
On June 9, 1951, Holwerda married Patricia Jean Miller in Elkhart, Indiana; they had two children. He had two more children with his second wife, Tamara Boden Shultz.
He graduated from Purdue University in 1955 with B.S. in Electrical Engineering, where he was a member of Eta Kappa Nu, a national engineering society, and Tau Beta Pi, a national engineering honorary.
After college, he worked for Allen-Bradley and Celanese Corporation in Engineering roles of increasing responsibility. These positions took him to Pittsburgh, Maryland, Mexico, Charlotte, and New York City. Holwerda was a registered professional engineer, a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, and affiliated with the American Institute of Electrical Engineers.
Holwerda retired as the assistant Treasurer of an Insurance Company when he lived in Lake Barrington and participated in Barrington American Legion Post 158.
ET1 Joseph Holwerda died December 3, 1989, and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery.
