Donald Sisson McCandless, Jr. was born in Davenport, Iowa, on December 25, 1924, to Donald S. and Hermance Teshner McCandless.


The family later moved to Oak Park, Illinois, where McCandless graduated from high school in 1942. 


He entered military service for World War II on November 12, 1942, and served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theatre on an LST (Landing Ship-Tank was a type of amphibious vessel designed to carry tanks, vehicles, troops, and supplies directly onto hostile shores during invasions). McCandless left active duty in October, 1944, and graduated from Principia College in Elsah, Illinois as a member of the Navy V-12 Program.  He continued with the Naval Reserves until April, 1952 attaining the rank of Lieutenant. 


On June 15, 1952, he married Mabel Harris in Kansas City, Missouri; they raised three children. 


McCandless was a long-time resident of Kansas City, Missouri, where he owned and managed his own insurance agency in the Kansas City North area for more than thirty years. 
He was an active member of North Cross Methodist Church, Clay-Platte YMCA, and the Kansas City area American Field Service. He enjoyed swimming, sailing and playing tennis with his family. 


LT Donald McCandless died peacefully at Nathan Adelson Hospice in Las Vegas, Nevada June 29, 2015. He is buried with family in Barrington s Evergreen Cemetery.
