William Frederick Zwilling was born December 12, 1933 Geneva, Illinois, to Daniel and Virginia Thompson Zwilling.


Zwilling graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B.A. from Harvard University in 1955, and received his M.D. in 1959 from Harvard Medical School. 


On February 11, 1957, he married Martha Louise Kreiser in Glen Falls, NY; they had five children.


After his residency in Cleveland, he was certified by the National Board of Orthopaedic Surgery in 1960.


Zwilling served in the Army Reserves during Medical School, entering active duty with the U.S. Army Medical Corps in 1962, where he served in Tripler Army Hospital in Honolulu and in the Third Field Hospital in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged as a Major in 1968. 


During his thirty years as an orthopedic surgeon in the northwest suburbs, Zwilling was on the surgical staff at Northwest Community, Lutheran General, and Good Shepherd Hospitals, while building his practice with Orthopaedic Associates in Arlington Heights. 


On May 19, 1973, he married his second wife, Diane “DeDe” Poppen Owen, in Barrington.


In addition to his successful medical career, Dr. Zwilling served the community as volunteer team physician for (the former) Forest View, Rolling Meadows and Barrington High Schools. He was an educator and vocal advocate for the physical conditioning and safety of young athletes throughout his time as a physician.

 

Major Bill Zwilling, M.D. died in Arlington Heights on June 11, 2000, and is buried in Barrington’s Evergreen Cemetery.
