August George “Gus” Reuter was born November 30, 1913 in Barrington to August Henry & Emma Wegener Reuter.
Reuter grew up on his father’s dairy farm at Rt. 62 and Sutton Road, and was working there when he was called up for duty in World War II. He served in the U.S. Army during the war, enlisting on July 28, 1941. He was honorably discharged at the rank of Technician Third Class on October 2, 1945. A TEC 3 (or T/3) was a specialized enlisted rank used by the U.S. Army during World War II. It was introduced to reward soldiers with high technical or specialized skills - like medics, radio operators, and mechanics -without giving them traditional combat leadership responsibilities.
On September 5, 1947, he married Dorothy Wendt in Barrington; they raised two children in Elgin.
Reuter was a professional truck driver. He belonged to the American Legion and the United Church of Christ in Barrington.
TEC3 Gus Reuter died September 5, 1990 in his Elgin home, and is buried with his wife and many other family members in Barrington’s Evergreen Cemetery.
