Lawrence T. York was born October 14, 1893 in Malone, New York, to Charles and Emily Thompson York.
After his father’s death in 1903, York’s mother moved with her two sons to Chicago, and lived with her sister.
York reported for duty in World War I on July 1, 1917 in Chicago, assigned to Battery C, First Field Artillery, an Illinois National Guard unit. In 1917, it was federalized and reorganized into U.S. Army Battery C, 149th Field Artillery. As part of the famous 42nd "Rainbow" Division, composed of top National Guard units from across the country, it fought in major campaigns including the St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne offensives in France. He was honorably discharged as a Private at the war’s conclusion.
On June 30, 1920, York married Hazel A. Mook in Cook County; by 1930, they made their home in Barrington.
York was a professional illustrator and commercial artist.
In 1955, following his wife’s retirement as a high school music teacher, the couple moved to Peoria, where York continued to work as an artist.
Sometime later, they moved to the Lutheran Retirement Home in Peoria, where PVT Lawrence York died November 23, 1977. He is buried with his wife and parents in Barrington’s Evergreen Cemetery.
