Emmett John Altenburg was born June 2, 1912, in Barrington, to August and Theresa Berg Altenburg.
In the summer of 1940, Altenburg joined his brother Bill in playing baseball for the Amarillo (Texas) Gold Sox, a minor league, Class D baseball franchise in the West Texas-New Mexico League. In 1941, he played outfield for Topeka, Kansas and Staunton, Virginia minor league teams. Known as a consistent slugger, with a batting average above .325, “Moose” Altenburg was playing for the Petersburg, Virginia Rebels until the week before he entered U.S. Army service for World War II on July 27, 1942. Altenburg married Ruby Pennell in September, 1947; they raised three children in Barrington.
He was owner of Altenburg & Son Cement Construction Company, and shared his love of “America’s Game” by coaching Barrington Little League teams throughout the 1950’s and 60’s.
Veteran Emmett Altenburg died Nov. 29, 1990, in Arlington Heights, and was buried with his wife and son in Barrington’s Evergreen Cemetery.
