LeRoy Richard “Bud” Haas was born April 16, 1922 in Chicago to LeRoy and Geraldine Omar Haas.
Hass was a student at Northwestern University when he was called to service for World War II. He mustered into the U.S. Marine Corps on February 3, 1943 and attended Officer Candidate School, resulting in the rank of Second Lieutenant, assigned to the Signal Corps. In April, 1945, Haas was participated in the 3rd Joint Assault Signal Company (3rd JASCO), a specialized joint-service United States military unit during World War II. It integrated Army, Navy, and Marine personnel to coordinate ship-to-shore communications, close air support, and naval gunfire during amphibious operations in the Pacific Theater. Communications Officer 1LT Haas directed a wire laying squad - under fire - at Iwo Jima. Haas was discharged from active duty on February 24, 1949, but remained in the Marine Corps Reserves until 1952, and was promoted to Captain.
Haas married Phyllis Wagner in 1946; they raised two children.
Professionally, he was an Executive in the construction industry, and the owner of Tri-R-Concrete.
Capt. “Bud” Haas died December 16, 1995 in Scottsdale, Arizona, and is buried with his wife in Barrington’s Evergreen Cemetery.
