Warren Clyde Hayes was born March 8, 1923 in San Bernardino, California to Francis and Maud Syphers Hayes.
Hayes grew up in Oregon, but in 1942, he was working for the U.S. Engineering Department in Ketchikan, Alaska, when he registered for the draft. At the time, this precursor of the Army Corps of Engineers was heavily deployed to the Alaska Territory to rapidly construct critical defense infrastructure, including military bases, airfields, and the Alaska Highway. He served in World War II as an Electronics Technician First Grade.
He graduated from Wheaton College in 1950, and married Elaine Jewel Faulkner in Barrington on October 21, 1950; they raised four children.
In the 1960’s the family lived in Moline, where Hayes worked for the Pioneer Central Division of Bendix Corporation in Davenport, Iowa on the CGSS Advanced Apollo Program.
Hayes and his wife were both involved in the Gideon’s International Association, distributor of scriptures to hotels, hospitals, nursing homes, etc., where he was President of the Illinois organization for some time. They were active in the Village Church in Barrington when they moved here in the early 1980’s.
Veteran Warren Hayes died February 12, 2018 in Barrington, and is buried with his wife in Evergreen Cemetery.
