Lawrence Peter McCarthy was born on July 17, 1933 in Chicago to Patrick and Nora Schirres McCarthy.
On June 9, 1962, he married Mary Helen Rigney in West Dundee; they raised three children.
McCarthy was a Veteran of the United States Navy, where he served three years - 1952 to 1955 - in the USN Special Services playing basketball. Historically, "Special Services" referred to the military branch tasked with managing morale, recreation, and athletic programs, which allowed standout enlisted personnel to play basketball globally. Today, these high-level competitive athletic opportunities are known as the All-Navy Sports program.
He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Western Illinois University and also served as president of his fraternity, Sigma Tau Gamma.
Following college, McCarthy taught and coached at St. Giles in Oak Park. He later worked as a coach for various Park Districts, and retired in 1990 as Treasurer of the Public Service Employees’ Union.
McCarthy was a member of St. Anne Church and Knights of Columbus. He was an animal lover and avid sportsman; he especially enjoyed golf, handball, basketball, racket ball, tennis and boxing.
Veteran Lawrence McCarthy passed away on January 24, 2019 in Barrington, and is buried with his wife in Evergreen Cemetery.
