Sam “Viron” Lefty was born November 15, 1929 in Detroit to Louis and Annie Savas Lefty.
Lefty joined the U.S. Navy on March 24, 1947. He served during the Korean War aboard the U.S.S. Hollister until his honorable discharge as a Boatswain’s Mate Third Class on November 15, 1951.
He returned to the Detroit area, where he earned an Engineering degree from Lawrence Technological University in 1958, and made his career as a Civil Engineer in the Chicago area until his passing.
Lefty married Marianna Gryparis; they raised two children in the northwest Chicago suburbs.
BM3 Viron Lefty died February 11, 1991, and is buried with his wife in Barrington’s Evergreen Cemetery.
