Joseph Daniel McLaney was born January 11, 1922 in Enterprise, Alabama, to John Clay and Anna Capps McLaney.
McLaney enlisted in the U.S. Navy for service in World War II in February, 1942. After extensive flight training and combat experience as a Navy pilot, Lieutenant McLaney became an advanced flight instructor in Corpus Christi, Texas until his honorable discharge as a Lieutenant in 1949.
He married Evelyn Umstead by 1945; they raised two daughters.
McLaney received a degree in Business Administration from Southern Methodist University in 1949, then took a position with The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company. He retired from the firm after 29 years in Dallas and Chicago, then worked for Rose Packing until he moved from Illinois.
LT Joe Daniel McLaney moved back to his hometown of Enterprise, Alabama in 1994, and died there on April 3, 1999. He is buried with his wife in Barrington’s Evergreen Cemetery.
