AMM2 Raymond E. Walbaum

Raymond Edward Walbaum was born October 12, 1918 in Barrington, the son of William and Anna Jacobs Walbaum.
During World War II, Walbaum enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and saw active duty in the South Pacific aboard the U.S. Enterprise. He received an honorable discharge in 1945 as an Aviation Machinist’s Mate Second Class. This role was responsible for assembly, servicing, maintenance, and repair of aircraft engines and airframes on aircraft carriers.
While stationed in Glenview Naval Air Station, Walbaum met Laverne Carsella. He married her on December 31, 1943 in Oak Park. She died 3 years later, and Walbaum never remarried.
Following the war, he was employed by T.C. Industries in Crystal Lake, a manufacturer of heat-treated steel products, bulldozer blades and military/construction track shoes. Walbaum retired in the 1980s as a member of the firm’s Quarter Century Club.
Walbaum was an avid sportsman, fishing in waters from the Florida Keys to the Arctic Circle, and was a member of the Golden Anglers Fishing Club.
In 1992, he moved to Quincy, California, where he resided near his niece until his death.
AMM2 Raymond E. Walbaum died October 16, 1996 following a brief illness, and is buried with family in Barrington’s Evergreen Cemetery.
